By Gerald | Estes Valley Voice
A little shop tucked away on Virginia Drive, right next to the Sugar Shack, is quietly changing haircuts and expectations in Estes Park. It’s called Vortex Barbershop, and it’s run by Kim Sheumaker, a barber with more than 28 years of experience and a story that travels all the way from Louisiana (then Texas) to our mountain town.
After sitting down with Kim, here’s what I learned — about her path, her vision, and what makes Vortex more than just a place to get trimmed.
Southern Roots, Mountain Dreams
Kim didn’t grow up with the Rockies as her backdrop. She spent her earlier life in Louisiana and later in Galveston, Texas. She brought with her that Southern warmth, music, and a belief in community—traits you can still feel today in every haircut and in every conversation at Vortex.
“Louisiana has good food,” I told her.
She smiled and said, “I brought Louisiana with me to Colorado.”
And that she did.
The move was deliberate, more than just geography. Kim and her family wanted something different — the more open skies, the slower pace, and the mountain life. Estes Park became home, and Vortex Barbershop became her canvas.
Barbershop Meets Professional Edge
You walk into Vortex and the professionalism hits you immediately. They offer a full menu of services: haircuts, beard trims, hot towel shaves, specialty fades, “rocker-billy” mullets, and blowout tapers. Kim’s trained under three Master Barbers—including one from the now-legendary Hombre Barber Shop in Estes Park—so when she says she knows her craft, she means it.
They welcome walk-ins (10 a.m.–3 p.m.), though you can always book online at thevortexbarbershop.com to reserve a spot.
A Shop That Feels Like Home
It’s the kind of place where you’re greeted by name, where you chat about how the elk are roaming, or what hike someone’s doing this weekend. Because Kim didn’t just build a shop—she built a community.
Open Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with walk-ins and appointments)
And the setting helps. Tiny, well-appointed, no fluff—just real talk, real cuts, and real people.
Why Vortex Matters to Estes
In a mountain town where many people come and go, Vortex gives locals something consistent. A place where your hair’s not just cut, it’s shaped by someone who cares. A place where travelers stop in, locals gather, and community builds one clipper sound at a time.
If you're new in town or just looking for a fresh look with a personal touch, Vortex Barbershop is worth the visit. Tell Kim I sent you—and don’t be surprised if you walk out feeling more connected to Estes Park than when you walked in.
